YITSKHOK MISHKIS

YITSKHOK MISHKIS (b. 1880)
            He came from Lithuania.  In 1902 he graduated from the Vilna Jewish teachers’ institute and went on for many years to work as a Yiddish-Russian teacher in Russia, Lithuania, and Poland.  After WWI he immigrated to Brazil where he was a teacher in São Paolo.  He contributed to: Di yidishe folkstsaytung (The Jewish people’s newspaper), Di idishe prese (The Jewish press), Di tsayt (The times), and other newspapers and publications in Brazil.  In book form: Fun yidishn folklor-oytser, zamlung fun legendes, vunder-mayselekh, mesholim, aforizmen, glaykhvertlekh un reydensartn fun di alte tsaytn biz haynt (From a treasury of Jewish folklore, a collection of legends, wonder tales, fables, aphorisms, witticisms, and proverbs from olden days until today) (São Paolo, 1942), 160 pp.  This book was published by a committee for the fortieth anniversary of Mishkis’s work as a teacher.
