YISROEL-YITSKHOK LIFSHITS-LEF (b. June 9, 1894)

            He was born in Antopolye, near Kobrin (Kobryn), Russian Poland.  He attended religious elementary schools and yeshivas, Russian schools, and had private tutors.  In 1922 he received a teacher’s diploma from the Tarbut teachers’ seminary in Vilna.  He worked as a teacher in Hebrew public schools and in the Bialystok Tachkemoni high school.  In 1924 he made his way to Canada.  He was active in the Mizrachi movement and in religious educational institutions.  He wrote articles of a Jewish religious character for: Keneder odler (Canadian eagle) in Montreal; Idisher zhurnal (Jewish journal) in Toronto; and Der amerikaner (The American) in New York.  He also published textbooks for the Lubavitch Center.  He was last working on collections from the Torah and midrash in English.  He was last living in Montreal, Canada.
