HILLEL
LURYE (b. August 18, 1890)
He was born in Ponevezh (Panevėžys),
Lithuania. He studied in religious
elementary school, yeshiva, and with self-education for secular subject
matter. At the beginning of the
twentieth century, he made his way to South Africa, contributed there to Di yudishe fon (The Jewish banner) in Johannesburg
(1909). He subsequently published (under
the pen names Y. Amikum and A. Shrayber, also) in: Di yudishe fon and Der
afrikaner (The African) in Johannesburg; Folks-advokat (People advocate), Di varhayt (The truth), and Yudishe
gazeten (Jewish gazette) in New York; Der
fraynd (The friend) in Warsaw); and Idisher
ekspres (Jewish express) in Lemberg; among others. He also edited the weekly newspaper Der shtrom (The current), which appeared
for a short time in Johannesburg.
