HERSH-TSVI LIVSHIN

HERSH-TSVI LIVSHIN (b. May 9, 1909)

            He was born in Kovno, Lithuania.  He studied at the Vilna “Ḥeder mesudar” (organized classroom), later in a public school in Vilkomir (Ukmergė).  In 1926 he graduated from the Hebrew senior high school in Kovno and in 1935 from the medical school of Kovno University.  Until 1941 he practiced medicine in Kovno.  He published articles on health issues in: Di idishe shtime (The Jewish voice) in Kovno.  In 1940 he founded the medical library and the publication Der hoyz-doktor (The house doctor), for which he wrote a series of popular pamphlets, including: Mogn- un gederem-krankaytn (Stomach and intestinal illness); Harts, blut un blut-gefes-krankaytn (Illnesses of the heart, blood, and blood vessels); Luft-vegn un lungen-krankaytn (Airways and lung illnesses); Shtof-umbeyt-krankaytn (Illnesses of tissue mutations); Nirn- un urin-vegn krankaytn (Illnesses of kidneys and the urinary tract); Skarlatin, difterit un svinke (mums) bay kinder (Scarlet fever, diphtheria, and mumps in children); Khirurgishe krankaytn (Illness needing surgery); and Mozlen, kaykhhusten (koklyush) un roytlen (krasnukhe) (Measles, whooping cough, and erysipelas)—all published in Kovno in 1940, each 31 pp.  He survived the war years in Russia.  In 1974 he made aliya to Israel from Kovno.  He was last living in Jerusalem.
