KADISH-CHARLES YOFE

KADISH-CHARLES YOFE (October 1897-November 16, 1955)
            He was born in Schuchyn (Ščučyn), Vilna district, Lithuania, the brother of Ben-Tsien and Khyene Yofe.  He moved to the United States with his parents in 1910.  In his youth he was active in circles involving “Aḥiaver,” one of the founders of the Hebrew monthly Hatoran (The duty officer) in 1913.  Over the years 1916-1919, he was a contributor to Varheyt (Truth), edited by Y. Gonikman, in New York, and in 1923 he became a member of the editorial board of Idisher kuryer (Jewish courier) in Chicago.  Several years later he became a contributor to Morgn-zhurnal (Morning journal) in New York, where he worked until the newspaper merged with Tog (Day) in 1953.  After that he worked for Local 10 of the ILGWU.  In 1944 he was a member of the executive of the Y. L. Perets Writers’ Association.  He died on a heart attack in the middle of the street in New York.
