ELYE TISH

ELYE TISH (1880-1956)
            He was born in Torne (Tarnów), western Galicia.  He graduated as a lawyer from the University of Vienna.  In 1904 he joined the Labor Zionists, later switching to the general Zionists.  During the elections he was an active leader and speaker for the Jewish nationalist list in Galicia.  For a time he lived in Nay-Sandz (Nowy Sącz) and later in Cracow.  During the Nazi occupation, he contributed to “Zelbsthilf” (Self-helf), before he was deported to the death camp in Plashov (Płaszów), from which he returned after liberation.  He remained for a time in Poland, moved to Sweden, and from there made his way to Israel.  He published articles in: Der yudisher arbayter (The Jewish worker) in Lemberg; Val-blat (Election newspaper) in Cracow (1907); Haynt (Today) in Warsaw; and Lemberger togblat (Lemberg daily newspaper); among others.  For a time he was editor of the Polish Jewish daily Nowy Dziennik (New daily) in Cracow.  He died in Jerusalem.
