HERSH-MEYER
ZILBERBERG (1907-1940)
He was born in Lodz, Poland, into a
poor working family. He became a laborer
himself while still young. He was active
in the textile union and in the Bund in Lodz.
He contributed to and for a time served as secretary to the editorial board
of Lodzher veker (Lodz alarm), in
which he published reportage pieces and impressions of working life. He also contributed to Di naye folks tsaytung (The new people’s newspaper) in Warsaw, and
elsewhere. When the Germans in September
1939 entered Lodz, the Gestapo arrested and tortured him bloodily to exact from
him the names of the Lodz Bundist leaders, but he gave them nothing. He died in the concentration camp at Radogoszcz,
near Lodz.
