HIRSH ALBUS

HIRSH ALBUS (1925-1944)
Born in Lodz to poor parents.  He studied in a Polish public school.  In his youth he became a laborer.  From March 1940, he was in the Lodz ghetto where he began to write poetry on ghetto motifs, which were sung as anonymous folk creations.  One poem, “Kartofl” (Potato), was published in Yiddish, with a Hebrew translation by Benyamin Tene in the anthology, Min hametsar karati (Out of distress I called).  During the liquidation of the Lodz ghetto (August 1944), he was sent to Auschwitz where he was murdered.
